Tātai Arorangi draws inspiration from the knowledge system of the stars, the conductors of the environment that we rely so heavily on.

Inspired by the kupu ‘Ko tātai arorangi he kai arataki i te ra,’ it speaks of how reading the stars once guided everything we did and how all components of our lives were guarded by these celestial bodies. It reminds us of our dependence on the taiao and the importance of ensuring we continue moving in the right direction.

Over the three days a range of thought-provoking kōrero, interactive workshops and structured physical activities will be presented, challenging how we can successfully navigate these current times to build a resilient, prosperous and sustainable future through mātauranga Māori approaches.

Each contribution will challenge hui participants to consider ways in which we can move towards a future involving Digital Innovation, Māori Systems Thinking, and Kai Māori Kai Ora, while being equipped to respond to the changing times in a way that enables Māori to prosper and live in a changing world as Māori.

The venue for the Hui-a-tau 2018 is Apumoana Marae, Tarawera Rd, Rotorua, a setting which offers the opportunity to be immersed within a unique tikanga Māori environment that has sustained and guided its people since the dawn of time.

What challenges will we face in coming decades? What policy settings do we need now to address them? The scene is set for an exciting, uplifting, and inspirational Hui ā Tau 2018 that will encourage innovative thinking and meaningful activities that will and are making a difference for our whānau Māori.
