Growing up in Tokoroa, Tracy Keith (Ngā Puhi) couldn’t have imagined a career as a contemporary artist. But after years of hard work and training, and now based in Wellington, his first solo show opens at Pataka on 16 December.

Keith’s ceramics are abstract forms that create connections between present and past. “They’re like talismans,” says curator Mark Hutchins-Pond, “Containers of memories so old they can be sensed but not recalled… Yet, paradoxically their stripped-back, roughly cast and embossed forms also seem surprisingly modern”.

Keith intentionally avoids his vessels being recognisable, preferring them to evoke “something ancient and timeless”. The surfaces bring to mind industrial fabrications, with minimal or no glaze; they appear raw and primal.

Keith has previously exhibited in group shows, including Whenua Hou: New Māori Ceramics at Objectspace and Tauranga Art Gallery. He currently balances his art practice with part-time work as Senior Art Technician, Māori & Pasifika Art at Massey University Wellington.

Pataka Sunday opening hours: 11am-4:30pm
