Condensing the highlights of 20 years of exhibitions – well over 600 individual shows and literally thousands of artworks – into one cohesive collection that reflects the breadth of Northart’s reach and the depth of talent it has attracted and nurtured is no easy task.

But it is a project that manager and curator Wendy Harsant, with the gallery since day one, has taken to with vigour and a touch of nostalgia, to produce ‘Twenty’, one of two stunning shows that celebrate Northart’s twentieth anniversary.

‘Twenty’ brings together 20 works by 20 artists, one representing each of the 20 years Northart has operated. The pieces range from the substantial – Jeff Thomson’s 3-metre high corrugated iron ‘Elephant’ relief exhibited in 2004 and Ross Ritchie’s 3-metre long ‘Stoop’ (2002) – to smaller gems like Maureen Lander’s ‘Tu Purupuruwhetu’ (2011) and Peter Shearer’s black stoneware bowl first seen in a members’ show in 2003.

Sculpture, painting, textile art, ceramics, fibre art, drawing and photography all feature in an unmissable show that includes some of the finest art ever exhibited at Northart, or on the North Shore.

Wendy will discuss her selections for ‘Twenty’ and look back at the history of the gallery’s two decades in a floor talk on Sunday 18 November at 2pm.
