The UFBA National Firefighter Combat Challenge, the ‘toughest two minutes in sport’, is coming to the Wellington waterfront, drawing 125 firefighter competitors from throughout New Zealand.

Firefighters competing include men and women of all ages serving in volunteer, rural and career brigades. The firefighters will race against each other and the clock to prove they are tough enough to take on one of the most physically and mentally gruelling events in sport.

This exciting and crowd-pleasing Challenge is designed to encourage firefighter fitness and safety while demonstrating the rigours of the job to the public. The event is a US import that was introduced in New Zealand in 2007.

Competitors wear full bunker gear and breathing apparatus as they take on a series of tasks that simulate the demands of real-life firefighting—including climbing a 6-storey tower carrying a length of hose and dragging a life-sized dummy for 30.5 metres.

Free to spectators, the event will be held at Odlins Plaza (front of Mac’s Brewbar) from 9am onwards on Friday and Saturday.
