Through my eyes.

Ulemj Glamuzina originates from Mongolia but has travelled extensively - living and studying in a number of different countries.

She moved to New Zealand in 2006 and now lives and works in Tauranga.

From a young age, she has always been attracted to, and fascinated by people - drawn to capturing what she saw; producing hundreds of pencil drawings in her early years at school. Her fascination of people lead her to learning a number of languages in order to have a better understanding of each culture and their thinking.

It wasn’t until her 20’s (when she finished her formal studies) that she started working with watercolour pencils before moving to oil. At the time her main concern was to strive for perfection and create elaborate realistic paintings of people.

Over the last couple of years her focus has changed, and she has started exploring different mediums including ink, charcoal, watercolour, pastels - often using combinations of these, to portray the complexities of the individual. Her portrait paintings are observed impressions, often conveyed through messy lines and the use of mixed media, allowing her unique line to speak.

“There is a lot of superficiality and separation in today's world. We talk a lot about human diversity and individuality however I am coming to realization that underneath it all, we're all one… The true essence we all share is singular. I am attracted to that true connection, fostering belonging and sincerity.”

Through her art she is attempting to capture what makes the person who they are, the layers of the human complex and to provide a glimpse of the soul.

Her keen desire is to connect with people through her art, with the hope the viewer notices the true substance of each individual portraying a truth that she sees, the essence of each individual as part of the one true Self.

Ulemj is the 4th artist to be the recipient of the First solo exhibition opportunity provided by the Incubator Creative Hub and supported by the Tauranga City Council Community Development match fund- supporting promising emerging artists on their journey to be validated and appreciated whilst being professionally mentored and supported - in Ulemj’s case by Artist. BCI graduate and veteran gallerist Lynette Fisher – a very lucky match.

“Some cultures believe taking photographs can capture the soul, but I believe I am helping to unleash it.” – Ulemj Glamuzina
