In the past decade, self-injury (also known as self-harm) has grown from an obscure psychiatric symptom to a mainstream problem. Clinicians, educators, medical and criminal justice professionals frequently feel unprepared to work with teens and adults who engage in self-directed violence.

These workshops are being delivered in New Zealand in response to requests from school counsellors, educators, clinicians, social and youth workers and concerned communities who are working with young people who are self-harming on a regular basis.

It is important for these providers, and those wanting to support youth in their communities, to better understand the etiology, treatment protocols, and the management and utilisation of one’s own emotional reaction, to the behaviour.

This practical workshop will discuss traditional treatment methods and present easy to use therapeutic strategies, and new treatment models, including the Impulse Control Log.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be better able to:
- Explain Three meanings and functions of the self-injurious act
- Clarify the differences between self-harming and suicidal behaviours
- Describe possible cultural, familial, and biological underpinnings of self-injury
- Describe Four Goals of Treatment
- Utilise the impulse control and other logs to help self-injurers differentiate thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
- Be more confident in working with self-injurers.
