Everybody Cool Lives Here invite you to be a part of the first public reading of Unflattering Smock, the story of the New Zealand caregiver.

Welcome to Sunnyvale Rest home and Hospital where we find six wahine from very different backgrounds working together like a well-oiled machine. Step inside the life of the caregiver – the gossip, the grind, the drama. Life on the floor of Sunnyvale has its ups and downs, but the sisterhood always remains.

Written by Rose Kirkup, who spent eight years working in rest homes throughout the Hutt Valley and Wellington. Unflattering Smock is her love letter to the women and men in Aotearoa who sacrifice aspects of their lives to care for our loved ones, in one of life’s most venerable times.

Everybody cool lives here.

Aims to bring the marginalised to the middle, with art that challenges audiences’ perceptions, encourages conversations and ultimately entertains. We produce award-winning works that reflect and celebrate Aotearoa’s unique and diverse identity.

Our shows have included the six-time award winning Wake Up Tomorrow, Force Field and Big J Stylez. We hope to share the passion and whanaungatanga developed within our teams to our audiences through high-quality works.

Rose Kirkup
Before establishing herself in several different roles within Aotearoa’s performance community, Rose lived another life. Entering caregiving at 16, after her nana passed away and continuing to work within rest homes for eight years. Trained as a performance designer she’s supported, realise, Awhi Tapu, An Awfully Big Adventure, Grand Opening & The Wolves.

Rose has predominantly worked with youth in theatre for the past five years encouraging young people of all abilities to engage with their creative voice. Within that time she’s also started to develop her voice as a writer, creating ‘I Am Tasha Fierce’, which explored her teenage years in the Hutt Valley. Kirkup has tautoko’ed fellow writers, directing Versions of Allah, The First Time, & Big J Stylez. Unflattering Smock is her love letter to the New Zealand caregiver.
