Anatoly Zelinsky (viola) and Louisa Pilkington (mezzo soprano) will perform at NCMA as part of our lunchtime concert series.

The programme features music by J.S. Bach, A. Zelinsky and Petr Eben.

Born in Russia, Ukrainian by origin, Anatoly Zelinsky studied at the Moscow Conservatory (1964-67) and the Kiev Academy of Music (1967- 70).

From 1968 he was Principal Viola of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and then again from 1980 to 1996 and toured with the orchestra throughout Europe, USA, Australia, Hong Kong.

In 1985 he was awarded with a title of The Honoured Artist of Ukraine and in 1996 was invited to join The Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra in Norway as a Principal Viola/Soloist.

In 1997, as a result of an international audition held in London, he won the position of Principal Viola with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2000, Anatoly immigrated to New Zealand and now lives in Christchurch.

From 2000 –2007 he performed in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as the Principal Viola and took part in numerous recitals.

Anatoly is also the founder / artistic leader of The International Soloists chamber group/Premier String Quartet.

As a soloist he has performed with different orchestras the works of Bach, Telemann, Mozart, Bruch, Paganini, Berlioz, Stamitz, Bartok, Hindemith, Martinu and more and has been the first performer of many new works for viola as well. He has participated in more than 50 CDs recordings with Naxos, EMI, Simax etc.

Anatoly combines music performance with intensive teaching/tutoring practice. For 25 years he has taken the leading position as a violin/viola performance tutor at the Kiev State College of Music, Kiev,Ukraine and from 2002 has been an Affiliate Examiner for Trinity College London.

Louisa Pilkington is a mezzo soprano who is a regular soloist and chorister with CBS Music in Christchurch. With a particular love for sacred music, she includes Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s St John Passion and B Minor Mass, Mozart’s C Minor Mass and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater in her repertoire. Within the secular repertoire, the ‘Loveless Songs’ of Peter Eben are a particular favourite.

Louisa is a past member of the Nelson Civic Choir and the Nelson Combined Choirs.
