Walking the streets may seem like just an everyday experience: moving one foot in front of the other, getting to places. But what changes when you try walking more attentively, making use of your senses?

During a pair of day/night sight-walks we will be looking intently at Auckland city center. The main sites of this investigation are the mundane and exciting everyday spaces & structures.

We will pay close attention to the motion and stillness, observing the interactions of various bodies – human, non-human, animal, architecture and infrastructure – coming together and drifting apart, noting the (a)symmetrical, the barriers and the open, solid and soft, looking far and looking close, zooming out and discussing what broader social issues they may represent. After the walk we will map out the individual sight experiences, creating a unique map.

This event is part of the "Walking – one sense at a time" series – an artistic experimentation with everyday spaces. In each of the walks we focus on one specific sense: smell/taste, hearing, touch & sight. The sight-walk is the concluding event of the series - these findings will contribute to the creation of a sensory map of Auckland.

The walks are free, but we kindly ask you to register, as the number of people for each walk is limited. To let us know that you would like to join any of the walks, please send an email to zamuruieva@gmail.com

The walk will be guided by an artist and cultural geographer Iryna Zamuruieva.
The project is kindly supported by Auckland Council and Splice.
