Born Temuka, South Canterbury 1961, moved to Dunedin in 1980, Wayne Seyb has lived and worked in Christchurch since 1999. His paintings have always reflected his surroundings and his life.

He says: “In a way, my work is my diary.

Following the Christchurch earthquakes in 2011, I painted street scenes constantly. I filled my pack with paint, grabbed canvases and started painting on the streets, squeezing the paint from the tubes directly onto the canvas.

In 2012 I provided central city street scene paintings for the courtroom of the Royal Commission Hearings into the safety of buildings in the earthquakes. All of the paintings were painted either on the footpath or propped against cordon fences. Dust blew into them. People talked to me about their experiences as I worked and I’d tell them mine.

The red zone gardens are where 8000 houses once stood. They stretch from the Avon Loop to New Brighton. I began painting them in 2014 focussing on the Avonside area which borders where I live. I worked in all seasons, completing the Red Zone Garden series of 26 paintings in 2018. This exhibition at the Linwood Community Arts Centre comprises 23 works from the series.”
