Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.

This course runs over a weekend 10am - 4pm both days. Courses are scheduled to run:
Saturday and Sunday 7 and 8 April 2018
16 and 17 June 2018
8 and 9 September 2018

About the course:
If you want to do some alterations or repairs to a garment, but don't know where to start, then come along and learn some new skills and tricks of the trade. This course provides the perfect opportunity to get help with sewing your favourite garment.

Course Outline:
On the first morning, Adelle will assess the experience level of students. Those new to sewing will spend time learning foundational skills with Adelle such as how to set up the sewing machine and basic sewing skills.

Adelle will then teach specific skills to the group such as putting in a zip, machine darning, adjusting the waist of a skirt using mock-up examples. Students can then begin to work on their own items with Adelle's assistance.

Sewers with some experience may choose to work independently on their own projects, seeking Adelle's input as needed, and joining into group sessions when relevant.

Adelle aims to adapt the class to suit the needs and interests of the students enrolled.

If you wish to get started on a new garment, bring your pattern, fabric, thread etc. A simple a-line skirt or a cropped straight kimono top are easy garments for those with no experience. Do not choose stretchy fabrics (these are for experienced sewers).

Otherwise bring some garments that need simple alterations or repairs. If you need to replace a zip, visit Spotlight or similar with the garment and they will assist you in buying a suitable replacement zip. Bring threads to match the colour of your garments.

The course runs overs two days 10am - 4pm. Tea and coffee will be provided for breaks. Bring a sandwich or packed lunch as the group will break during the day.

Expected Learning Outcomes for Sewing Weekend:
- How to repair rips and tears in a garment
- Learn machine darning
- Learn how to change a zip in pants or a skirt
- How to adjust the waist of pants/jeans or a skirt
- Learn how to cut out a simple garment and start sewing it up

Who should attend?
Those wanting to learn how to make simple garment repairs or how to cut out or sew up a garment. Suitable for total beginners or those with a little sewing experience.

Either bring your own sewing machine or use one of the Berninas in our sewing room. Please note that our Berninas are domestic sewing machines which cannot handle heavy upholstery fabrics.
