In celebration of Whio Awareness month, we have a very special Whio Encounter running March 30th to April 2nd!

During this 30-minute encounter you’ll learn all about Whio, their unique characteristics and what can be done to secure the future of this endangered bird. You’ll also get to meet Beau, a German Short-haired Pointer, who is trained to find whio in the wild. Beau will be showing off his amazing conservation skills as he sniffs out whio feathers hidden in the crowd!

This fun and interactive encounter will run each day at 10.30am! Meet our wildlife keepers, whio expert Andy Glaser and Beau outside the Rainbow Arena.

Whio are endemic to New Zealand, and one of only four ducks species in the world that lives in fast flowing water. Their presence is a great indicator of healthy river eco-systems. Unfortunately the loss of habitat through changing land and water use has been a major threat to Whio over the years.

*Freshwater Fish Encounter is free with a Rainbow Springs Day Pass.
*Whio Encounter runs 30th March-2nd April 2018 only.
