Lantern Festival is one of the Wellington Night Market’s annual events. Over the past three years, we have transformed Lower Cuba Street into a wonderland lined with hundreds of handmade lanterns.

We are proud of Wellington's amazing creativity and cultural diversity. WNM Lantern Festival is not the biggest but we will be the coolest! Bring your friends, family and join us in celebrating the most important festival in the Chinese calendar. Let’s celebrate Lantern Festival and Chinese New Year in Wellington style!!!

In February 2018, with the support of Singapore Airlines, Western Union, and Wellington City Council, we will again throw open our doors and welcome thousands of Wellingtonians and visitors to the WNM Lantern Festival!

This is a two-day celebration of Chinese New Year and the only Lantern Festival in the Wellington region. Attendees will be dazzled by hundreds of handmade lanterns, including your favorite life-sized sculptured lanterns in the form of a five meter long dragon, three meter high peacock, two meter high panda, butterfly, and even a kiwi! This is in addition to over 50 stunning performances running over both days!

That’s only the beginning! Over 50 Wellington local food stalls will be serving up delicious treats all night!

New in 2018, we present our project: Midsummer Night Dream Lantern Parade. The Lantern Parade takes place on Friday, 16th of February. It is an activity which has never been seen before in Wellington.

The procession involves hundreds of local families who have made their own lanterns at our lantern making workshops, giant lanterns made by local artists, and dancers to showcase the artistic and creative side of Wellington.

To inspire the creativity of Wellington’s young generation, WNM has set up over 30 lantern making workshops. There will be over 300 students participating, aged from 6 to 12 years old. These will be held around Wellington’s regional schools and open workshops for adults will be available for both a fun and educational experience.

Proudly sponsored by Singapore Airlines and Western Union, the winners of the Lantern making competition will win a return flight to Asia to experience Chinese celebration first hand or a cash price of $1000!
