Nisa and ChangeMakers Refugee Forum, in collaboration with Wellington City Council, are hosting an event to celebrate World Refugee Day on June 20.

The celebration is open to all and will showcase the contributions former refugees make to our community, as well as highlighting Wellingtonians who are actively doing great work in the field. Festivities kick off at 5:30pm at the National Portrait Gallery.

The walls of the Portrait Gallery will be adorned with a special exhibition by the Auckland Resettled Community Coalition (ARCC) with photographs from staff photographer Nando Azevedo. The work presents different narratives of former refugee experiences through the medium of portrait photography.

The heart of the evening will be stories shared by former refugees from ChangeMakers Refugee Forum; and the founders of social enterprises Nisa and Pomegranate Kitchen. Nisa makes underwear in the heart of the Wellington CBD, employing women from refugee backgrounds, and Pomegranate is a social enterprise that employs cooks from refugee backgrounds to make delicious Middle Eastern food. The evening will finish with live Afro beats from Wellington legend Sam Manzanza.

The event is free and open to everyone. It provides an opportunity for people from all across Wellington to celebrate our diverse city and welcome its newest members from refugee backgrounds.
