All Girl Big Band Makes Musical History at this summer’s Nelson Jazz Festival.

The acclaimed All Girl Big Band will be performing in concert at the Nelson Jazz Festival. Formed in January 2016 as a result of a conversation between Lana Law and Kate Taylor, it didn’t take them long to realise that in fact they could name virtually a full 17-piece big band of Christchurch female musicians. What was at first a crazy, out-of-the-box idea became reality.

In a largely male-dominated musical genre, to see a full jazz big band on stage with a woman in each section is one thing, but to find a full big band of women is stunning. Full sections of trombone, trumpet, sax and rhythm, playing with class and style. Add a powerhouse vocalist and you’ll be blown away! The band consists of an array of talented musicians – the majority are professional musicians or music teachers.

They will be performing a programme called The Ages – an historical journey of music inspired by arrangers, composers and performers from the 1930s through to the latest hits of today. Musical director Lana Law describes the inspiration for this concert as coming from women who have “left a legacy through song”, including Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Debbie Harry, and Beyonce.

Reviewers of the The Ages programme describe it as ‘an unequivocally chilled-out and enthusiastic masterclass in Big Band virtuosity. Having chosen some of the big names in music history to honour, their musicianship met the challenge with ease and respected each genre.

The band is clearly having fun together –they present their skill with good humour and humility. The relaxed, understated style of their presentation is almost deceiving – these are some seriously talented musicians with a showcase of skill.’
