The next Globe Sunday matinee concert on October 27 features a young singer who has made a name for himself in the region. Lindsay Yeo became involved in singing at Palmerston North Boys High School, and took up classical singing training with his current teacher, Mary Ayres.
At 27 years old he has competed successfully at the Manawatu Vocal Competitions and Wellington Aria Contests, was awarded the Musica Viva Scholarship in 2014, and was also selected to perform in the PACANZ Young Performer of the Year 2014.
He appeared with the Renaissance Singers as the baritone soloist in the debut performance of Graham Parson’s Anniversary Mass, and reprised the role in Whanganui with the Schola Sacra Choir. In November of 2018 Lindsay performed the role of ‘Adam’ in the world premiere of Samuel Arnold’s recently-discovered 200-year-old work, “Adam and Eve”, along with Manawatu Sinfonia, the Renaissance Singers, Schola Sacra Choir, and soprano Pasquale Orchard as Eve.
This year he performed as a soloist for the Palmerston North Choral Society in an Anniversary work by Graham Parsons. He has performed in other Globe concerts but this is his first as the featured singer. Lindsay lives in Palmerston North with his wife Michaela and two children. When not performing, Lindsay works as an educational psychologist for the Ministry of Education.
Appearing on stage with Lindsay will be pianist Guy Donaldson. Guy received his formative piano instruction from Maurice Collier, and then at Canterbury University with Maurice Till. In 1984 he studied in London with Paul Hamburger and Roger Vignoles. Guy is active in the Manawatu as a teacher, adjudicator, piano soloist, accompanist, chamber music player and music coach, and was from 1989 to 2018 music director of the Renaissance Singers.
The concert’s theme is Serenade. A serenade is often described as sung by a man at night at the window of his beloved. It will feature love songs from Europe covering a range of moods from the dreamy, to the passionate, to the petulant, and even to the frightening, but almost all connected with the evening or night time. Guy Donaldson will also provide a couple of solo piano pieces connected with the theme.
The programme of beautiful melodies includes music that will be familiar to concert goers but also some which deserves this opportunity to be heard. It opens with a declaration of love from the pen of Beethoven and concludes with the famous Toreador Song from the opera Carmen in which the Toreador not only flirts with the crowd, but flirts also with Carmen herself.
