The Andrew London Trio celebrate the release of their seventh album, and the second ‘live’ one, simply entitled ‘A Live Concert’, after the wording on the promotional poster designed by Andrew Bicknell for a June 2019 gig at the Wellington Bluegrass Society in Petone.
The gig was significant for two reasons, firstly it signalled the departure of saxophonist Nils Olsen, one of the trio’s regular ‘thirds’, and secondly it coincided, quite unexpectedly, with Bicknell’s being awarded the QSM for services to music in the Queen’s Birthday honours list. As a consequence there was great excitement and an air of celebration at the WBS that evening, which the trio believes has been successfully captured on the recording.
Long time AL Trio and Hot Club Sandwich collaborator James Tait Jamieson joins Andrew (guitar) and Kirsten London (bass) on sax, flute, whistle and melodica to render the album’s tracklist which consists of perennial requests from the HCS era (Poddy Understands Me, Wallpaper, Appliances), AL Trio staples (Middle Aged man in Lycra, No Ordinary Sheila), new songs as yet unreleased (Alfonso, Palace of Dreams) and other odds and ends.
Andrew London’s reputation rests on 20 years’ constant recording and touring throughout New Zealand and Australia, delivering quirky songs which frequently amuse, but which always carry a slight satirical barb. Many come packaged in a deceptively jaunty and infectious 1940s-style swing style that betrays all three musicians’ love of the trad jazz tradition, from Dixieland to the Rat Pack. Others, by contrast, evoke folk, blues or country traditions - some even sound like English Music Hall novelty songs, and there’s even a sea shanty.
Kirsten London handles bass guitar duties and offers the odd tune lifted from the Peggy Lee or Julie London songbooks, while Tait-Jamieson delivers the occasional Sinatra-inspired standard with flair and affection.

The Gallery is a small informal setting which allows you to see and hear this great trio at close quarters which also affords you an opportunity to talk to Andrew, Kirsten and James during the interval. Self service complimentary tea, coffee and home made banana cake too!
Concert will be in the gallery at the Te Puna Quarry park. Plenty of free parking.
