Artists Open Studios has become the gateway to experiencing Whanganui’s vibrant and diverse arts community. Home to many established, world renown and emerging artists, the city is a premier arts destination for New Zealand.

Throughout this event you will be taken on journey through some quirky and historic locations of over 70 studios and over 200 participating artists located in the beautiful heritage city, and the surrounding areas of Marton and Waverley.

With a plethora of mediums to explore including sculpture, ceramics, painting, mixed media, glass, furniture, textiles, weaving, welding and many more, the event appeals to serious collectors and those simply looking for the unique opportunity to visit artists in their studios.

In association with the event there are some special activities and entertainment planned;

Take a Behind the Scenes Tour of Sarjeant Gallery, a rare opportunity to enter the Sarjeant Gallery collection store where you will discover the stories behind one of the country’s most significant collections from those who work with it every day.

Enjoy a performance of music, visual art, movement and theatre which allows the audience to be surrounded by a visual and musical experience - Sound Canvas - presented by the Whanganui Brass Band at the historic Royal Wanganui Opera House.

Learn the techniques of clay, mosaic or felt-making in Workshops – held during the week by participating artists.

Find all event information on our website – which features profiles for each studio, an interactive map and search by suburb and medium. There you will also find the 2019 Artist Open Studios Trail Guide available to download, you can also purchase a copy online or from one of our distribution points.

Whether you are local, or from far-afield, we hope you enjoy the art, the people and the experience - openstudios.co.nz
