Today, approximately 85 percent of the construction industry is made up of small to medium-sized businesses, with the rest being a few large employers (often are with part or all overseas ownership). With the current shortage of workforce, many are expected to continue to source international workers. There is an urgent need for government organisations, industry associations, and skilled and experienced health and safety practitioners to support the workforce and its complexities.

Quick Earth Moving Ltd proposes to organise and sponsor a conference to promote health and safety awareness among building industry businesses and professionals. With the vision to promote good practice among the Chinese business and professionals in the building industry, New Zealand Chinese Building Industry Association proposed to co-organise and support the event, together with leading government & non-governmental organisations, including EMA, WorkSafe, and The 3W Project, to share expertise and offer advice on health and safety issues.

The NZCBIA is a non-profit membership group with the vision of uplifting New Zealand building industry standards by providing a useful platform for Kiwi companies, local ethnic Chinese businesses along with companies from China to work together for New Zealand’s thriving property development and building industry.

The EMA provides its members with employment relations advice from industry specialists, a business school with over 100 courses and a wide variety of conferences and events to help businesses grow. In addition the EMA advocates on behalf of its members to bring change in contentious areas such as resource management, Employment Law, and infrastructure development.

WorkSafe is New Zealand’s primary workplace health and safety regulator. They lead over 550 staff based across New Zealand who are working to lift health and safety performance, supporting New Zealanders to return home from work healthy and safe. As the regulator of the workplace health and safety system, they have three key roles: Regulatory confidence, Harm prevention, and System leadership.

The 3W Project uses resources of business and charities to benefit the ethnic groups in the local community. By organizing and participating in free events, the Project teaches ethnic groups CPR life-saving skills, health & safety knowledge, emergency hotlines and business knowledge in their own language with them donating to charity in return.
