Walk amongst a sculptural forest of trees that have grown from the detritus of Hawke’s Bay beaches, surging from the waves onto the shore, and into the gallery at Creative Arts Napier.
Twisted and bandaged around the branches of each tree is the waste that humans cast into the ocean; plastic, cloth, tin and fishing line that smother and alter the natural world. The resulting beauty of Beached Forest seems to transcend this materiality; and begs the question of how the natural world will survive and repair itself without human intervention.
A New Zealand social reality is that climate change will alter the regional environment, for everyone. This art piece confronts this issue by offering an interactive experience that will highlight the impact that waste is having now, and on our future.
Watch the stop-motion movie by Mabin showing on a loop within the gallery, plus view the vast sewn-together plastic bait bag wall hanging that acts as a back drop to the forest. These additions will highlight the damage that certain human activities cause to our oceans and shoreline.
Susan Mabin is an award winning Hawke’s Bay multimedia artist concerned with environmental themes. She spends many hours combing the shoreline for materials that she transforms into artworks.
Join Susan at Creative Arts Napier for a series of exciting educational children’s workshops to coincide with her installation and the Harcourts Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival; listen to environmental guest speakers and collaborate on the creation of additional sculptural pieces for the installation. In particular, during these workshops the children will focus on creating a ‘Tree of Hope” centrepiece for the installation.
