During her recent artist residency at Karekare House on Auckland’s west coast, Belinda found herself inspired by her natural surroundings. She spent time walking the rugged wind-swept coastline and then sketching beach finds once back in the studio.
The contrast of engaging directly with this vast powerful landscape; and then the quiet slow recording of a small intricate part of it, helped her to experience it more deeply.
In ‘Immerse’ Belinda returns to this contrast with loose raw gesture, and slow considered drawing using subjects who appear to be absorbing or in some ways, becoming their surroundings.
Belinda was the recipient of the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award in 2010 and The Estuary Artwork Award in 2013. She has been a finalist in the Wallace Art Awards, the NZ Painting and Printmaking Award and the Adam Portraiture Awards. Belinda’s work is held in a number of private and public art collections, including the Wallace Arts Trust in Auckland.
