This symposium is designed for Secondary School students. They will explore ideas and key themes of identity and nationhood as emphasised in the gallery’s exhibition by artist Kauri Hawkins: Red vs Blue which is a Tuia- Encounters 250 commemorative event.

The symposium is an opportunity for youth to access, discover and engage with successful artists including Kauri Hawkins who are working within the creative industry. Art in all its mediums has proven to be a strong and significant tool to build confidence, to connect with others, and build positive self-expression.

Students will participate in workshops with these artists to share their own stories and experiences through creative writing, waiata, kapahaka, spoken word, movement and the visual arts.

One of the symposium’s aims is to inspire students to consider their own creative futures and what pathway they might take to achieve their creative career goals.

Local Tertiary providers are invited to contribute to the programme and promote the artistic pathways available through them. This will help demonstrate clear pathways to make art a genuine/profitable/successful career for our local students.

Also, by sharing the story of Cook’s arrival widely through the work of Kauri Hawkins, students will have a better understanding of New Zealand’s dual heritage, our complex history of migration and settlement and how this has shaped New Zealand’s identity for all our community.
