Welcome to part three of our three class series with master woodworker John Shaw, hosted at The Warren, a community workshop on Cross Street, behind Karangahape Road. In this class, you'll learn to use machinery safely and accurately to build a flexible compact workbench.

This bench works superbly in small and large workshops or on the kitchen table. Set the height to perfectly match your size.

Machines utilised include bandsaw, jointer, thicknesser, table saw, biscuit jointer, drill press and router table.

What you will learn:
- How to machine a set of components straight and square
- How to glue them up into a single surface
- How to re-machine them true
- How to cut them to length and square
- How to fit ends using routed slots
- How to drill holes to use for hold downs
- How to tidy up and give your work a completed and cohesive feel.

The fitting of a vise will be demonstrated but is not part of the course. We will discuss vises and holding methods and working heights to enable you to make decisions about what you prefer. All required materials will be provided except for vise.

The bench is approximately 1000mm long by 200-250mm wide, and can be shortened to suit if required.

About the series:
The Warren is proud to be hosting master woodworking John Shaw for a series of three two day courses in April and May 2019. Join one class, or take them all; they work as a series. Each course runs for two days, 9am-5pm.

This is a rare opportunity to hone your woodworking skills with an expert who has 30 years of making and teaching experience. All courses are appropriate for beginners and experienced woodworkers. No matter who you are, you’re sure to benefit from John’s knowledge and skills.
