What better setting than St Andrew’s College for the idyllic Pastoral Symphony. Beethoven’s sixth symphony moves from calm to storm with some merrymaking inbetween.
The first half of the concert has a Russian and Eastern European flavour, with works by Glinka, Smetana and Rachmaninov. The chamber orchestra is joined by baritone soloist Malcolm Leitch to perform ‘Aleko’s aria’ from the first of Rachmaninov’s operas.
Thirteen of the players will serenade you with a wind and brass (with added double bass) piece by Richard Strauss. The Serenade was the first of his works to have survived the concert hall; not bad for an 18-year old.
