This popular introductory course offers you the opportunity to learn about wine and winemaking. It focuses on the main wine varietals grown in New Zealand and the styles of wine that have built their reputations.

You will look at the European traditions that have influenced New Zealand winemaking. Subjects covered include: Principal grape varieties and characteristics, the winemaking process, sparkling wine production, viticulture, climate classifications and regional differences, wine labels, closures, faults, ageing, and the storage and service of wines.

You will learn the procedure for how to taste and evaluate wines and the principles that underscore food and wine matching. Graduates receive the NZSFW Certificate in Wine, 2 NZQA unit standards and WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

Part time Course is held over 7 Tuesdays evenings.

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is an entry level qualification providing a straightforward introduction to wine. It is ideal for boosting the confidence of new or inexperienced front line staff in the hospitality and retail sectors for basic product knowledge and skills in the storage and service of wines. It is also a great course for those wanting to learn the main wine grape varieties, wine styles and food and wine matching basics.

This Qualification was initially created for the front-of-house staff within the on-trade sector. It has grown into a course with Global appeal, providing basic knowledge of first time employees to the wine industry and the interested consumer alike.

Pathways to Further Study
You may continue with NZSFW to study for the WSET Intermediate qualification.

Career Opportunities
Although a large number of general interest wine enthusiasts join this course it is also ideally suited for those working in or wishing to enter the hospitality beverage or wine industries.
