CJC Creative Jazz Club is proud to present one of New Zealand’s most in-demand jazz exports, in Auckland for one night only.

Renowned bassist Matt Penman brings his friend and frequent collaborator, saxophonist Will Vinson, to New Zealand for the first time.

Matt & Will have played together since 2003, appearing on multiple recordings together, and they will be drawing from Penman’s recent album Good Question, alongside some of Vinson’s compositions.

Joined by locals Kevin Field and Stephen Thomas, this will be a superb night of modern jazz to remember.

Matt Penman

Originally from New Zealand, Matt Penman moved to the U.S in 1994 to attend Berklee College of Music, and in 1995 to New York, where he maintains an international performing, recording and teaching schedule as one of jazz music’s most in-demand bassists.

He is a 13 year member of the SFJazz Collective, and in 2009 formed collaborative quartet James Farm with Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks and Eric Harland.

In addition to his main projects, Matt is a member of trombonist Nils Wogram’s quartet Root 70, and the Aaron Goldberg Trio. Other collaborators have included John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kenny Werner, Dave Douglas, Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Guillermo Klein, Rebecca Martin, Nicholas Payton, Fred Hersch and Wayne Shorter.

Matt’s projects as band-leader include ‘The Unquiet’ (2001) and ‘Catch of the Day’ (2008) on the Fresh Sound label, as well as his latest “Good Question” (2018) on Sunnyside Records. He is featured on over 140 recordings on various labels.

Will Vinson

Originally from London, Alto Saxophonist/Composer Will Vinson moved to New York City in 1999 and has remained there ever since. Since his arrival, he has appeared and/or recorded with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig, Marcus Gilmore, Chris Potter, Kurt Elling, Lage Lund, Aaron Parks, and many others.

Will's saxophone playing is executed with incredible power and dramatic sensitivity, and is characterized by his imposing sound and technique; influenced by saxophonists from Cannonball to Chris Potter, he nevertheless brings his own unique approach to every performance. Will's writing, and the playing of his colleagues, combines a great respect for the century-long jazz tradition with explorations into the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic realms of contemporary forms.

Will has an international reputation as a leader and sideman. All About Jazz New York describes Will as playing “with a relentless force”. Thomas Michelsen of Denmark’s Politiken, hails this “very exciting saxophonist” with a “beautiful, softly modulating tone”, and John Fordham of The Guardian described a "superb solo of rugged leathery sounds turning into mellifluous high notes” with “secure control and storming energy". Time Out London calls will an "exciting young altoist with a lethal approach to writing and soloing”.
