Community Planting Day

Come along to our first Community Planting Day for the season and bring the whole whanau!

We are aiming to plant 1500 trees along the Waitaua Awa to restore the river and the water quality at the Whangarei Falls /Othuihau.

Restoring the riparian margin will help to reduce erosion, the sediment and nutrient load and improve the water quality of the Waitaua and the Hatea! We already planted about 800 trees at the site last year, but want to continue the mahi and widen some of the existing strip!

All the plants are eco-sourced and have been grown in our community nursery He Kakano in Whangarei. They are funded through the Matariki Tu Rākau programme.

Matariki Tu Rākau supports communities to come together to plant trees and create living memorials 100 years after the First World War, as a part of the One Billion Tree Programme.

There will be lunch after all the hard work, provided by the amazing Palate Wholefood Collective, so please indicate if you are coming along and we will make sure we provide enough food for everyone!

What to bring:
- Planting spade and gloves
- Re-usable water bottle
- sturdy shoes
- Raincoat

We will have some spades as well as gloves available on the day, but we appreciate more people bringing a spade or two!

Directions: Tanner Place, Tikipunga, off Bush Haven Drive. There will be signs to direct you to the planting site along the Waitaua about 150 m off Tanner Place. Depending on the site access we may have to go through Wellingrove Place to get to the planting site but there will be clear signage on how to find us!

Please keep an eye on the weather, we will post on Eventfinda and Facebook in case we need to postpone the event!
