The ancient romantic legend behind the Qixi Festival, now popularly recognized as Chinese Valentine’s Day, tells of a cowherd and a weaver girl banished to opposite sides of the Silver River (the Milky Way) but reunited for one night on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month (August) each year by a flock of magpies that forms a bridge between the lovers.
Northart’s Chinese arts co-ordinator Miao Xu has taken this theme to curate an impressive collection of portraits and figurative works that speak to communication between people and cultures, both obstacles that prevent understanding and aids that facilitate it.
The exhibition includes work by sixteen mostly younger emerging artists and recent graduates from diverse backgrounds.
