About the Exhibition - Windfall Light
These recent paintings are a direct result of my bicycle journeys from Karekare through the Waitakere Ranges. On my early morning cycle rides when the sun breaks through the clouds after a rainfall the rising vapors create billowing ethereal shapes and sparkling prisms of light.
When I finally arrive home on a sunshine day I'm greeted by a vast expanse of mirrored ocean, shadows of clouds accompanied by slanting rays of light. The endless skies and plays of light offer endless inspiration.
Down the rivers of the windfall light comes from the poem 'Fern Hill' by Dylan Thomas
About the Artist - Dean Buchanan
Dean Buchanan’s art reflects his energy, passion and intimate connection to the New Zealand landscape and environment.
He expresses this love of landscape in his large oil paintings. Mountains, bush, coasts are rendered into semi-abstract forms outlined in thick strokes of color, often straight from the tube. They are colorful, dramatic and complex depictions of particular places. They have a raw vitality that reflects New Zealand's rugged scenery in cohesive, vivid, and strikingly energetic images.
