Debbie Donnelly is a well-known shibori (tie-dying) artist teaching at Te Auaha (joint Institute of Creativity of Whitireia and WelTec). Last year she was in Kurume and Hiroshima through NZJEP grant researching kasuri weaving.

This year she will soon leave to Japan on the inaugural Ishibashi Foundation art and culture fellowship run by Japan Foundation to promote kasuri weaving, aiming to bring kasuri textiles to a New Zealand exhibition later on this year. She is also planning to visit Naoshima Island during the Setouchi Art Festival Triennale. This is a major art festival that incorporates public contemporary art and rejuvenates the inland Islands between Shikoku and Okayama regions.

Her talk will tell about her Japan Foundation fellowship work planned for this year. Photos show her textile works made in Itoshima in 2018 as a result of her visit to Hiroshima. The sculpture is a famous contemporary work in Naoshima by dot artist Yayoi Kusama.
