To celebrate the 49th International Earth Day this year, Climate Karanga Marlborough are organising a family picnic which will take place on Sunday April 28th at Baden Powell Reserve at Pollard Park from 10.00am to 3.00pm. We are keen for families to come along and join us.

The theme for this year's International Earth Day is Protect Our Species.
There will be a range of participatory activities happening throughout the day, including games for kids, a scavenger hunt and an adventure quiz with prizes.

At 11am there will be a special event with Diane Dobson from the Marlborough Falcon Trust giving a talk and showing a native NZ falcon.

There will also be displays with information about the Pelorus Bat Project which works to protect a population of our native long tailed bat, and information about the Predator Free Program.

This will be an opportunity for children and their families to learn about New Zealand's threatened species and the reasons why many species around the world are facing extinction. Our planet is at a critical crossroads with the increasing effects of climate change and environmental degradation, resulting from our current lifestyles.

Ice creams and coffee cart will be available. Families are asked to bring picnic baskets, and because this will be a zero waste event, to come prepared to take home any waste they may have at the end of the day. If you want to purchase coffee please bring your own coffee cups, and similarly water bottles.

Please put this date in your calendar and come and join us.

If any people or groups in the community wish to be involved or can help with organising activities please contact us at info@climatekaranga.org.nz

Earth Day 2019 Art/Creative Writing Banner Project.

Art work and creative writing by students from schools in the Marlborough region will feature on 60 screen printed banners to be exhibited at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim, the library in Picton and the town hall in Havelock between April 24th and May 3rd. The banners will feature our threatened species in Aotearoa.

A Teachers Resource Kit, with guidelines for teachers and resources for classroom use, was sent out to all Marlborough schools, and students from 15 schools participated. Original drawings and poems submitted by students will be put up on display between 17th April and 1st May at the Marlborough District Library.

The banner project is being organised by Climate Karanga Marlborough as a celebration of our unique wildlife and an opportunity for all Marlborough schools to participate in an exciting region-wide event.
