Diverse intercultural encounters that people have in today’s society make it difficult to deny that
migrant bodies are often excluded.
Access to basic and necessary information through verbal communication as a fundamental means to articulating one’s experience is vital to becoming integrated within society.
Artist Emerita Baik seeks to manifest the intangible experiences of people living with a language barrier through sculpture and painting works in her solo exhibition EOmma. Working with everyday objects found in Korean homes, and traditional wrapping and quilting techniques, Baik wraps, casts and covers objects to explore and articulate the alienating effect of estrangement experienced within everyday life, disrupting how we perceive everyday life through this exploration of materiality.
