Are you a parent of a child with autism or do you work with a child with autism? Do you want to learn skills to support their learning and engagement? The Victoria University of Wellington autism research team is hosting an education workshop teaching some of the strategies from the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM).
The ESDM is an extremely promising intervention which has been used in over 35 countries worldwide. It is a play-based behavioural therapy that targets a wide range of developmental skills for children with, or suspected to have autism and who are under the age of 5. ESDM therapy aims to accelerate child learning through fun interactions which are embedded in daily routines and play.
Two of our certified therapists (Lauren van Noorden and Jessica Tupou) will be running this introductory ESDM workshop focusing on hands-on strategies for building positive interactions with your child. The focus of this workshop will be an overview of the foundational ESDM techniques, including how to become a fun play partner with your child. Becoming a play partner is the first step in the ESDM, and is important to establish before teaching any new skills.
Tickets for this event are $25, places are limited to 35 people.
There will be two additional workshops this term:
- Intro and Becoming a Play Partner in Porirua (Date TBC)
- Let's play - Joint activity routines, playing with toys, and pretend play in Petone (26th June)
