A full-day experiential training in the internationally acclaimed interviewing strategy for uncovering suicidal ideation, planning, actions, and intent known as the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE Approach) as listed on the Zero Suicide Website’s “Suicide Care Training Options” list.

These trainings are provided for groups of clinicians using Scripted Group Role-Playing (SGRP) and are designed to greatly enhance actual clinical skill at using the CASE Approach.

Undoubtedly one of the most difficult and critical tasks for any clinician is the assessment of suicide risk. In this full-day experiential training participants will develop a working expertise in the innovative interviewing strategy for eliciting suicidal ideation, behaviors, and intent called the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (the CASE Approach). The internationally acclaimed CASE Approach has been described by David Jobes Ph.D., a former President of the American Association of Suicidology, as follows:

“The CASE Approach moves the clinician almost imperceptibly into the secret internal workings of the mind and soul of the patient tormented by suicidal ideation. I believe that the CASE Approach is a remarkable conceptual and clinical contribution to the field of suicidology. It should be taught to any front-line clinician. It has the power to meaningfully save lives.”

In the course of the day, participants will enjoy experientially mastering the nuances of the CASE Approach using the highly acclaimed Scripted Group Role-Playing (SGRP) developed by Dr. Shea over the course of 20 years. SGRP eliminates acting from role-playing, resulting in it receiving, to date, the highest average participant satisfaction rating on a training using role-playing to appear in a refereed journal (3.9 out of 4.0 in 20 consecutive trainings)1.

Using both didactics and video demonstrations, Dr. Shea provides an in-depth presentation of how to use the CASE Approach to weave seven interviewing techniques designed to increase validity into a fluid interview strategy for uncovering suicidal ideation, planning, actions and intent over the four regions of the CASE Approach (presenting suicidal ideation, recent ideation over the past two months, past suicidal ideation, and immediate ideation and intent during the interview itself).

By the end of the day, using SGRP, each participant will have individually performed, as the interviewer, approximately 10 role-plays (to enhance their skill in using each interviewing skill), will have functioned as the interviewee in approximately 10 role-plays (to experience what the interviewing techniques feel like to clients), and will have functioned as an “observer coach” in approximately 20 role-plays to better understand the nuances of the interviewing techniques and to consolidate their use.

Shawn Christopher Shea, M.D. is an internationally acclaimed innovator, speaker, and author in the fields of suicide prevention, clinical interviewing, and creating the therapeutic alliance having given over 850 presentations worldwide. He has been a featured speaker at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Suicidology for 21 consecutive years and was a recipient of an Outstanding Course Award from the American Association of Psychiatry. He has been a frequent presenter at venues such as the Psychiatric Congress, the Door County Summer Institute, and the Cape Cod Symposium.

Dr. Shea is the Director of the Training Institute for Suicide Assessment and Clinical Interviewing (TISA) - www.suicideassessment.com. He is the author of numerous articles and seven books with The Practical Art of Suicide Assessment being viewed as one of the classic texts in the field of suicidology. His recent book, Psychiatric Interviewing: The Art of Understanding, 3rd Edition was selected by the British Medical Association as the 2017 Book of the Year in Psychiatry.
