Senior Curator, International Art at Auckland Art Gallery, Mary Kisler’s engaging new book "Finding Frances Hodgkins", published to accompany the Frances Hodgkins exhibition at Auckland Art Gallery, is part travelogue, part art-detective. It details Mary’s several trips to Europe on the hunt for Hodgkins’ works and for precise information on where and why she painted them. Richly illustrated, steeped in scholarship and brimming with Mary’s admiration for Hodgkins and all she endured and achieved, this vivid book is a marvellous Hodgkins companion. Published by Massey University Press and on sale from May 4.

‘For Frances Hodgkins, travel became an essential tool in developing her own forms of modernism', says Mary Kisler. ‘She was prepared to put up with a peripatetic lifestyle in exchange for adventure, inspiration, and the challenges of becoming a part, if only briefly, of new communities, whether the farmers and fisherpeople around the shores of the Mediterranean, or the fellow artists, writers, students and friends who shared parts of her journeys.'
