Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland.

Sunday 26 May 2019 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM.

Do you long for a deeper sense of belonging in NZ as a migrant woman? Would you like to feel more comfortable participating in your community? This workshop explores the challenges and barriers that prevent migrant women from fully engaging with their communities and why they might feel isolated at times.

Through dialogue, we unpack the Kiwi culture and understand how it may differ from the culture of our country of origin and why that’s OK. It debunks common myths about fitting into society and recommends how to navigate changes to our sense of identity and thrive in NZ.

All migrant (including Refugee) women who have either recently arrived, long time settled or looking to see if NZ is right for them. Basic conversational English is required.

Tutor, Dheepa Nedungat moved to NZ from Malaysia almost 20 years ago, initially as an IT project manager and then more recently as a facilitator in the education and non-profit sector. She loves teaching this course as it reminds her how much NZ as a country has offered her the space to grow and experience more of who she is. Understanding first hand the challenges faced as a new migrant and equally the joy from overcoming them, Dheepa teaches from her heart and brings life experiences to share.

Expected learning outcomes:
- Identify what stops you from fully participating in NZ life as a migrant woman
- Understand the stress and changes to your family relationships
- Debunk the myths about fitting in and challenges of unconscious bias
- Identify tools and skills for deepening your sense of belonging in NZ
- Develop new friendships and camaraderie

Our morning sessions will run 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM (we will take a break for a cup of tea during this time), then a one hour lunch break to mix and mingle (bring something to share), then afternoon session 1:30 - 4:30 PM.

Our mission is to provide quality affordable and accessible lifelong learning opportunities for our community.
