This course, new for 2019, is taught by Ania Grant and starts on 22 October. Classes are 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM on Tuesdays over six weeks.

What does an early-nineteenth century novel written by a genteel spinster have in common with a sexually explicit television series produced almost 200 years later? They are both phenomenally successful and critically acclaimed romantic comedies.

But what makes them so popular and why is it mainly women that like them? Should we praise these narratives for creating strong female characters and for presenting a uniquely female perspective? Or should we be suspicious of the fact that their heroines seem to be preoccupied with snaring a man? Are they trivial, escapist fantasies, or do they offer something valuable to their audiences?

Join Ania to find out more.

Expected learning outcomes:
- Understanding of the two main texts
- Understanding of romantic fiction as a narrative form
- Understanding of key critical traditions relevant to romantic fiction
- Introduction to recent research into human psychology and cognition, and how ti applies to our understanding of fiction
- Developing skills of textual analysis and critical thinking

Who should attend this course? Anyone who enjoys romantic fiction in all its guises, from Jane Austen's novels, to chick-lit, and Hollywood rom-coms. Anyone who would like to understand better the popular appeal and critical controversies connected with such texts.

Our mission is to provide quality affordable and accessible lifelong learning opportunities for our community.
