Day 1: Monday 7 October: Crafting for a Cause
Today's cause: Foster Hope

Today's programme will kick off with an inspirational talk from Zak Quor from Voyce.

From Zak: I grew up in foster care from the ages of 7 – 17. I had a lot of interesting experiences going through the state care system and not all of them were good. It's a difficult place to be in when you're taken away from your family and placed in a kids’ home but it doesn't always have to be all bad. I had a good share of wonderful people scattered throughout my life to help me survive my time and thrive when I came out on the other side.

Since leaving foster care I have worked to give back to the community of carers by sharing my experiences, telling them what worked (and what didn't), and working with the government to improve the care system to this day. I feel like it's the least I can do to say thank you to those who helped me, and an opportunity for me to become one of those people who made my life not so bad.

Following Zac's talk, teacher Natasha Bagley will work with the children in the sewing room constructing items for Foster Hope.

From Natasha: It's always nice to know someone cares for you, particularly if you are a child going into foster care and perhaps you have nothing more than the clothes on your back. GetReal students will create hand loom knitted beanies and machine sewn fabric marble maze games to donate to Foster Hope, who will give them to children going into foster care placements around Aotearoa.

Foster Hope is a local charity that makes up backpacks to be given to children removed from their homes, so that they have a bag to carry their toiletries and some items that show them they are loved. If students would also like to bring a toiletry item or nearly new book to donate to these backpacks, they would be greatly appreciated. See Foster Hope's kit list here: https://www.fosterhope.org.nz/kit-contents/.
