On July 20 1969, the world waited with bated breath as Neil Armstrong descended down the ladder of the lunar lander and set the very first human foot on the surface of the Moon. His famous words “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind” crackled their way back to Earth and the face of history was changed forever.
2019 marks 50 years since this historic moment. Since then, there have been many highs and lows in the world of Moon exploration and further space travel. Eleven more astronauts stood on the Moon, claims were made that the landings weren’t real altogether, the Apollo programme was cut, the private space travel sector rose, and now lies the ongoing challenge of returning humanity back to the lunar surface and further afield onto Mars.
Giant Leap is an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of this milestone and highlighting the significance of this moment in history. Wander through and learn more about the Apollo programme, the astronauts who became overnight heroes and the incredible technology that enabled this.
Giant Leap explores how the mission’s successes, failures, lessons learnt, and technology advancements had a real and significant impact on the generations that followed 1969. You’ll discover how this milestone moment will continue to do so over the next 50 years, as humanity reaches further afield in our hope to better understand our place in the universe.
Open during regular Stardome hours from July 11 – 25. Entry included in space gallery fee.
