The end of the Great War saw New Zealand society engage in some intense efforts to evaluate the world that emerged from the conflict. However, these evaluations possessed a contentious quality and by the end of the interwar period the war’s legacy was a disputed one. In part, this dynamic reflects how the enormous emotional resources the country had poured into its war effort, alongside its blood and treasure, had come with different expectations of what the war would bring about.

This talk by Dr. Steven Loveridge explores these processes of cultural mobilisation and demobilisation and their larger implications for posterity’s sense of the Great War, including our own today.

Dr Loveridge works from the Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies and has researched, lectured and written on numerous aspects of the First World War. He is currently co-authoring the WW100 Centenary history volume on the New Zealand home front.

Light refreshments from 5.30pm, presentation starts 6pm.
Ground Floor, Central Library
