Dr Sharon Leitch examines the life and legacy of Dr Margaret Cruickshank, the first woman to attain medical registration and work as a general practitioner in New Zealand. Dr Cruickshank worked tirelessly for the Waimate community before succumbing to Spanish Influenza in 1918, and is fondly commemorated there.
Dr Cruickshank and her colleagues paved the way for women to study and practice medicine in New Zealand. Her life and legacy reflect the commitment to education and work ethic of her Scottish family.
