The Hungarian Film Festival is dedicated to presenting a range of high quality, unique, cutting edge, exciting and little-seen work in New Zealand. It is great opportunity to immerse yourself in the energy and originality of Hungarian culture through the evocative images offered by the selection of five outstanding films every night between 21-25 October at 6pm.

Bad Poems (Hungarian: Rossz versek), a comedy-drama about a man in his 30s overcoming being dumped by girlfriend excels in sensibility and ingeniousness; it's a heartfelt ode to masculinity in all of its splendid brittleness. A magical films with the power to transform the ordinary into extraordinary, the very personal into something universal. The Best Hungarian Film in 2019! Lively, cine-literate and powered by a playful use of music.

The Troupe (Hungarian: Vándorszínészek) a historical road movie about a handful of travelling actors. A hanging, seduction, a duel, and love, on and maybe off stage The Hungarian troupe are all charming in their own sense. Though some may seem a little stubborn, or greedy, or scheming, different sides show up through their journey making them all the more lovable. Meetings and partings, friendship and betrayal, love and hatred… With all in one, to Budapest the troupe goes! A truly fine Hungarian road movie.

Trezor (Hungarian: Trezor), a political thriller, full of unexpected twists, where nothing and no one is what they seem to be. The keys to Trezor, the vault of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are lost in the confusion of the 1956 Revolution. And so, only a few days after the battle for independence is violently put down, the police pulls a former bank robber out of prison and asks him to open their own uncrackable safe. The convict, however, finds something very different behind the vault’s door than what he expected. The film commemorates the Hungarian Revolution of 1956

Bazils (Hungarian: Brazilok) a 2017 ethno-tale with humour and tears. Chaos bursts out among the gypsy minority of the town of Acsa when the mayor, urged by the new young priest of the village, announces that this year the gypsy football team called Brazilians can also take part in the football championship of the village. The surprise hit of the year 2017! It was for the first time a Hungarian film had a larger attendance the second week than the first. Moviegoers in Hungary really loved the film.

One Day (Hungarian: Egy nap) is a modest drama. Anna is 40. She is always in a rush. She has three children, a husband, a job and financial stress. Anna meets deadlines, makes promises, takes care of things, brings stuff home and remembers everything. But she never catches up with her husband. She’d like to talk to him. She feels she is losing him. And she feels she can’t always evade what comes next. It’s a confidently and naturalistically helmed feature film, delivered in a precisely detailed, unhurried, hyper-real way. The film nabbed the Fipresci award at the Cannes Film Festival.
