Author and academic Sharon Mazer has captured the courageous story of a queer brown boy in a big white world.
I Have Loved Me a Man: The Life and Times of Mika tells the story of a Timaru Boys’ High student, who is transported from South Island disco champion to Los Angeles and the festivals of Edinburgh (10 times), performing for high-flying audiences, including Prince Charles.
Mika, a Māori boy adopted by a Pakeha family, went on to work with Carmen, Dalvanius Prime, Merata Mita and others to develop outrageous stage shows that toured the world. He played a policeman on television in Shark in the Park and came out on screen playing a takatāpui role in Jane Campion’s Academy Award-winning film, The Piano.
