Industrial Haiku, Sefton Rani’s first solo exhibition, introduces the viewer to paintings inspired by the stimulus of wabi sabi, the Japanese aesthetic described as the “beauty that is imperfect, impermanent and incomplete”.
The works, which are primarily created with the use of collaged paint skins, are then tempered with combustion. These paint skin layers represent time and the history of the object or surface. As the paint is applied dry, chisels, blades, saws and other improvised implements are used to structure the paint instead of using a brush or roller.
The results are these organic, thick, multi layered impasto works that often include found objects and studio detritus, which add to their visually dense patina.
