Join us in celebrating the UNESCO International Day of Light at Ellen Melville Centre!
On Saturday 11th May from 12-4pm, the University of Auckland and Ellen Melville Centre will host a variety of free demonstrations and hands-on activities related to light and physics.
Did you ever want to learn how to build a camera? Or how our eyes see colour? Or did you just want to meet someone who builds lasers? Come explore these ideas with scientists from the University of Auckland at the International Day of Light Science Fair.
UNESCO declared May 16th to be the International Day of Light in order to highlight the role light plays in art, culture, science, and technology. The day celebrates light and how it is increasingly harnessed and applied in photonic-based technologies that play roles in fields as diverse as medicine, communication and energy.
The broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrate how science, technology, art and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO – education, equality, and peace.
Thanks to Auckland Council, The Ellen Meville Centre, UNESCO, students from the University of Auckland SPIE Student Chapter, and the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies.
