The “Stories of Chinese New Zealanders” is a series of interviews with descendants of Chinese people living in Aotearoa New Zealand. The programme looks at the history of their hard work, their settlement and development, integration into New Zealand society, and dedication to contribute and actively promote Chinese culture. The programme also introduces first generation Chinese New Zealanders’ experiences in studying, working and living in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Ma Lin is a first generation Chinese of her family to come to New Zealand in 2002. She grew up in Changsha, Hunan – the province of Mao Zedong. She studied Educational Psychology at university and was a teacher at a college for 10 years in China, however, she followed her passion of becoming an Early Childhood Education teacher in New Zealand and is now qualified and registered. She spends her spare time teaching children Mandarin at the Wellington Chinese Language School since 2003 and because of this work, she has been granted an Excellent Overseas Chinese Teacher award by the Chinese Government.
We are grateful to the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust and the Wellington City Council for their financial support and Wellington Access Radio for supporting and hosting the programme.
