This is a one-day practical workshop aimed at beginning photographers and designed to get you on the path to using your DSLR or mirrorless digital camera with full understanding and creative control. The idea is to move away from ‘point and shoot’ and learn how to capture personal and unique photographs.

Modern cameras are superb image-capture tools. They’re quite smart and will often get things ‘right’ if you let them do their own thing. But your camera is still just a machine, and if let it make creative decisions for you, your photographs will never be a true expression of your personal vision and creativity.

To get the full benefit of more advanced courses and workshops, it's important you understand how to make your camera do precisely what you want it to. This workshop will help set you on that path.

Content: As in other creative fields, making good photographs has always meant finding a personal balance between technique and aesthetics. While the technical aspects of digital photography can seem daunting (especially in Manual mode) it’s really not that complicated, it just requires practice. This workshop will give you a solid start on the path to achieving a balanced, holistic creative approach to your photography, opening up new possibilities for future development.

We’ll start with a run through the important camera controls and later, in the field, learn how to bring them together to allow you to capture photos the way you see them. During the day you can experiment with various combinations for different effects and you’ll find that what may seem a little confusing in theory will make sense and drop into place in practice.

Cameras: DSLR, Mirrorless Compact System, Four-Thirds, Bridge, Superzoom and Compact. (Workshop does not cover cellphone cameras or film cameras.)
