Jess Jean is bringing female character comedy to the forefront of the performing arts industry in Christchurch. Recently nominated for Best Emerging Performer at Palmerston North Fringe Festival, Jess Jean’s larger than life character, Mackenzie Mckenzie is both a visual and comedic spectacle.
Mackenzie Mckenzie was first created in response to comments, reactions and discussions regarding feminist issues like the #MeToo movement and female stereotypes. The character is a protest to all those who believe that they need to trade in their feminine and sexual qualities in order to make a crowd laugh, or those who think that women can only be one thing; sexy or smart, funny or pretty etc. Jean’s latest solo show, It’s Mackenzie Country... Obviously is a raucous and hilarious homage to the ‘basic b*tch.’ It’s a celebration of the type of women who are often scorned, scoffed at, or not taken seriously - this show is empowering, unique and is out to make real change.
“People think the way girls look is a mirror into their intellect, you know, women can’t be pretty as well as being smart, intelligent or funny,”
Jean says that often female comedians are immediately sexualised.
“I was once told that men are inherently funny whereas women are inherently sexual."
“I still struggle with being taken seriously – there’s this idea that to be taken seriously I have to dress down, be less feminine. But this show is really about being able to do what I want.”
