After having a busy life raising five children, establishing a professional life in academia and teaching ballroom dancing Janett Levien finally “retired”. The children are now independent and scattered around the globe.
When Janett was widowed and had the freedom to leave her professional life behind, she returned to where her heart has always been – her place of birth in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Here she reconnected with her creative juices and took up painting, experimenting with acrylics, inks and finally oils. Janett dances socially, practices tai chi, loves her garden, lives in a quirky cottage on the coast, and with a friend, manages a destination market once a month.
J P Hughson (artist) neatly sums up what painting is for Janett. He said, “For me a painting is like a story which stimulates the imagination and draws the mind into a place filled with expectation, excitement, wonder and pleasure.”
Janett’s work is influenced by a need and desire to stimulate wonder and pleasure in others while expressing her own excitement and wonder at the world, colours, scenes and stories. She has always had a rich imagination and a love of colour that strongly influences the subject matter and style of her art. Spirituality has always been an essential part of her life and many of her pieces reflect this, both playfully, in the form of mythical creatures and whimsical scenes, and more meditatively in calm scenes and subject matter suggestive of a spiritual life.
Janett has contributed to the Heretaunga Women’s Centre Exhibition in 2018 and 2019 and sells her work at the Magpie Market, Meeanee. She is also a member of Napier Art Club.
In Your Dreams is Janett’s first solo exhibition; a modest showing of a small collection of her work. The pieces intend to stimulate the viewer’s imagination with elements of magic or mystery, sometimes offering an idea to turn over in the mind. Janett hopes that you enjoy viewing and contemplating the pieces as much as she enjoyed creating them.
