Proudly presented by the Embassy of Japan in New Zealand and the Japan Foundation, the Japanese Film Festival is coming to New Plymouth! All films will be screened at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.

All movies are preceded by a short documentary about Japanese culture, starting 10 minutes prior to the film’s screening. Booking is not required, and seating is not allocated, so come early to secure your favourite spot!

The Japanese Film Festival 2019 offers entertainment with a mixture of drama, action and comedy that will inspire and engage those seeking to broaden their cultural horizons. All movies are free admission, so spread the word and bring along your friends and family!

Senkotsu (lit. “Bone-washing”), is a tradition that is almost extinct. The eldest son of the Shinjo family, Tsuyoshi, returns to his hometown to wash the bones of his mother. His father’s life is in a mess due to his inability to accept his wife's death. Also returning home is eldest daughter Yuko, also facing various hardships in life herself. Will the senkotsu ceremony help the family members unite?
